Electromagnetic Wave Introduction

Visualize an electromagnetic wave, see electric and magnetic fields and change wavelength and polarization.

A plane electromagnetic wave travels along the x‑axis with its electric field (E) and magnetic field (B) oscillating in phase, perpendicular to each other and to the direction of propagation. The wave follows the relations E = E0 sin(kx‑ωt) and B = (E0/c) sin(kx‑ωt), illustrating the fundamental link between electric and magnetic fields and the speed of light.

Students can start, pause, and reset the animation, then use sliders to adjust the wavelength and the polarization angle. Changing the wavelength alters the spatial frequency of the field arrows, while rotating the polarization angle turns the plane of the electric field and the magnetic field together, showing how polarization defines the orientation of the wave.

By interacting with the simulation, learners observe the proportional relationship between E and B, see how wave speed relates to frequency and wavelength, and explore the concept of polarization. This reinforces Maxwell’s equations and basic wave optics concepts appropriate for senior‑level high‑school physics.
