Electromagnetic Wave Production

Explore how a vibrating charge creates transverse electric and magnetic fields that travel as waves.

Electromagnetic waves are generated when an electric charge accelerates, producing a changing electric field that in turn creates a magnetic field. The resulting fields are perpendicular to each other and to the direction of travel, forming a transverse wave that carries energy through space.

The simulation walks students through the process step by step: a rope pulse illustrates a mechanical wave, a single charge is dragged to create an electric pulse, the charge oscillates and emits transverse E and B fields, and a dipole antenna driven by an AC source shows how real antennas radiate. Controls let users drag the hand or charge, send pulses, toggle field‑line display, and rotate the 3‑D views.

By interacting, students see the link between changing electric fields and magnetic fields, observe wave polarization, and understand how antennas convert alternating current into propagating electromagnetic radiation.
